Augustana Lutheran Church

Augustana Lutheran Church (ELCA)
In 1911 the Reverend Valberg arrived in Underwood to become the pastor in two rural churches of Bethel and Birka. Under his pastoral guidance, Augustana Lutheran Church was built in Underwood in 1917. A member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Augustana Church remains true to its mission of ensuring that the Good News of Jesus Christ continues to be faithfully proclaimed and lived out in the community well into the future.

First Assembly of God

First Assembly of God
In 1979 five families who had been attending the Garrison Bible Church, along with several other interested people, felt the need for a Pentecostal church in Underwood. First housed in the old city hall, the First Assembly of God Church was completed in 1984. The Reverend Al Johnson, his wife Susan, and his family came to Underwood from Tennessee in 1998 and became the pastors of the First Assembly of God Church, where they are currently serving the congregation.

St. Bonaventure's Catholic Church

St. Bonaventure's Catholic Church
Underwood was young when the Catholic parish began.  A priest occasionally came from Bismarck by stagecoach to Washburn to be met by some member of a Catholic family and brought by wagon to the Turtle Lake area. A Catholic mission was established at Turtle Lake in 1904. Mass was offered at several places including one on the site of Wanamaker, the original Turtle Lake townsite. Later a meeting was held to continue the missions in Turtle Lake but failed to materialize and plans went ahead to build in Underwood. With the building of the Garrison Dam in 1955 the parish population increased, and in 1978 a new rectory was built and attached to the new church. In the early 1990's a group of women started a quilting group making many quilts and donating most of them to needy places. They make a special quilt every year to be raffled at the fall chicken dinner.

St. John's Lutheran Church

St. John's Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod)
Around the turn of the century, the area around Underwood was open for settlement. German immigrants from southern Russia and from other parts of the United States took advantage of this opportunity to establish new homesteads. The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod moved in with some of these early settlers. The first official acts on record for St. John's Lutheran were baptisms that took place in 1902. A full century later Pastor Dean Hartley and his family came to Underwood and were instrumental in organizing the 100th Anniversary celebration for St. John's Church.

Underwood United Methodist Church

Underwood United Methodist Church
After the Soo Line Railroad was completed from Washburn to Underwood in 1903, Rev. A.G. Runions, who had been preaching in Coal Harbor and the Rasmus Nelson Schoolhouse, spoke to some of the people attending the meetings and suggested plans for a church in the new town of Underwood. The church was completed in 1904 and remodeled in 1950 and again in 1976. At the 100th Anniversary of the Underwood United Methodist Church its members reflected on the many pastors, members and constituents who so faithfully supported the church with their prayers, presence, gifts, and service.
