Background

The UAEDC established Beautification Day as an annual event in Underwood in 2009. Volunteers planted over 70 trees along the Old Hwy 83 Business Loop to provide a tree-lined corridor to guide motorists off US Hwy 83 into the town's business district. To honor our veterans, residents also planted trees, flowers, and shrubs, and poured concrete for a new sidewalk and pad, at the town’s Veterans' Park. The park will be dedicated at an official ceremony to be held during Harvest Fest 2010.

2010 Projects

In 2010 residents focused on painting three downtown buildings, adding more trees to Veterans' Park, and landscaping the entry into the downtown district. Particular emphasis was also put on signage along US Hwy 83 to encourage motorists to stop and shop at Underwood businesses.

A 2007 study commissioned by the UAEDC and designed by the NDSU College of Engineering and Architecture recommended the addition of several "pocket parks" to the downtown streetscape. Benches have been purchased and are being strategically placed into green spaces to invite more people linger in the downtown area for a refreshing drink, ice cream, and visiting with friends.
